Envelope filters create an automatic wah effect. Where a traditional wah pedal is foot controlled with an expression pedal the envelope filter creates the wah effect automatically with pre-assigned timing with the control knobs. This effect is most found in funk and disco but can be used in jam rock or jazz for interesting effects.
